Thraxas at War. Buffy Comic Problem.

Thraxas at War, seventh book in the series, now available as an ebook. As Thraxas book nine has already being published, it means there are now eight of the nine available, and just one more to go before the ebooks are up to date. Thraxas rumbles unstoppably on, which he does have the bulk to do. As he has been known to say, when criminals see him coming, they know they've got a problem.

I'm still receiving Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics regularly, thanks to the efficient subscription department at Reed Comics. As the comics are an official, Joss Whedon sponsored continuation of the series, I sort of feel obliged to buy them. But I'm not enjoying them that much. I've never particularly liked the artwork, and nor was I ever that keen on there being thousands of slayers. (Not sure if there still are thousands of slayers, I've got a lot of unread comics.)

However I'm unable to let go. I seem to be trapped into regularly buying comics I don't really enjoy. I lack the willpower to do anything about it. I don't know what the solution is. Just buy them for the rest of my life, I suppose.

I wish the Buffy bot had made another appearance. In the TV series the Buffy bot always did its best. It had a friendly personality too. I liked the Buffy bot, and regretted its tragic demise. It deserved another outing.

If they are not obliged to entertain you, you are not obliged to buy them.

  3. Yeah, Buffy Bot WAS great! I loved her and SMG clearly had tons of fun playing her.

"Angel's lame. His hair goes straight up, and he's bloody stupid!"

Re. the comics, I'm still a huge Buffy fan so am continuing to read them all - Buffy, Angel & Faith, the Willow and the Spike mini-series. There's still some great stuff in them, especially when the old TV writers get involved, which sadly is less and less nowadays and Joss hasn't written one for a very long time. Still, it remains Joss' Buffy. And she will always have a place in my heart and in my pop culture consumption.

    1. I had a slight feeling of disconnect at the thought of SMG actually playing the Buffy bot. Because really I always think of it as actually being a robot.

I'm still buying these mini-series too, though again, I haven't read them all. I do remember a comic written by Jane Espenson which was good. But I find that most of the comics just don't have the feel of the TV series. Maybe this is because of the vast global army of Slayers, it's such a long way from the original concept.

  4. The Buffy comics just didn't grab me. I imagine that was mostly due to the art. It just seemed real 'canned' to me. Dunno.
I would've loved to have seen that show run on forever -- with Spike.

    1. I wish it had gone on longer too, it could have. Also, I'd have liked to have seen a Faith the Vampire Slayer.

    2. Faith was def all that PLIS. Her as the next slayer, after Buffy moved on, would've been sweet.

    3. Well, around Buff s.7 Joss and co. did talk seriously about a Faith continuation. But sadly Eliza passed to go and do Tru Calling instead.

They also considered a Slayer School spin-off but thankfully that was quickly canned. There was also almost a Spike TV movie (post-Angel) from Tim Minear which fell through. And of course the aborted Buffy Animated Series.

It was only really 'Ripper' with Tony Head as Giles, which was to be set and filmed in the UK and co-produced with the BBC, that ever truly came close to being made. Joss wrote the script, deals were done with the Beeb and there was an announcement at Comic Con. But in the end I think it was rights issues that killed that one off. Thanks a bunch FOX. Grr Argh!

I let go of Buffy after season 6. I refuse to countenance thousands of Slayers, or a rubbish Spike.

  6. It might be just me, but pleasing as she is to the eye, that Makri is an awful lot whiter and skinnier than I imagined her being. Or maybe it's not Makri at all, but some other fearsome lass in a chainmail bikini. That would be an acceptable explanation.
